A World Ex libris competition with the topic Bread - cultural heritage is organized by BalkanKult Foundation in cooperation with the EricArts Institute from Bonn, the Turkish Ex libris Society, the Museum of Bread in Ulm and the Ex libris Association of Belgrade.
The theme of bread has been chosen because bread represents most certainly one of the most important creations of mankind. There is no doubt that bread is the most common food found on dinner tables worldwide. But, Bread is not only a food, it is a symbol of spirituality and a reflection of cultural traditions. It is a common link between so many cultures and traditions, but each having its own way to prepare it. The secret of Bread lies in its true gastronomic, spiritual and cultural uniqueness.
Every participant will thus have the opportunity to present his or her work and culture abroad. Besides, a catalogue of the selected ex libris will be published and an exhibition will be touring all around Europe, and hopefully around the world. A panel of well known judges will attribute prizes to the works of art that will express originally and creatively the cultural aspect of bread.
What is an ex libris? It is a small drawing of about 13 centimetres that is printed or glued on the first pages of a book. On the drawing is mentioned the name of the owner of the book. This kind of art initiated about 500 years ago. But with the evolution of technologies, ex libris can now also be created by computer.
This competition is open to all your creativity. However, the organisers will be delighted to receive works of art that are linked to the culture, religion, traditions or customs of the contestants' country or region. The main idea is to create a mosaic of works of art under a common theme.
