Tate Britain is presenting an interesting and varied selection of the works of William Hogarth, one of the most innovative and intriguing artists of the 18th century, in a splendid exhibition, opened on the 7th of February 2007. This exhibition is without a doubt the most comprehensive presentation of the artist's creations, selecting those paintings which offer a complete si thorough image of Hogarth.
The event at Tate Britain proves that Hogarth was much more than a briliant artist and draftsman, as he also had a strong satirical witt, visible in the whole of his work. From his elegant paintings, no matter if they were genre scenes or portraits to his drawings and sketches or engravings, the artist could easily chose any subject and technique with great ease, keeping his unique style and spirit. A prolific artist, his output was characterized by variety, energy and elegance.
At the same time he remained a very "British" artist, marking and representing an important period in the history of the United Kingdom. Surprisingly modern in mis manner, character and representation, he chose subjects and themes - city life, manners, social scenes and life, patriotism, charity - which are still interesting and not out dated. The exhibition at Tate Britain is trying to emphasise the fact that William Hogarth was indeed UK's first modern painter and had a great influence on the development of British art.
Besides the works of William Hogarth, several compositions of contemporary artists, inspired by Hogarth, are also present in the exhibition.
