How did Rio de Janeiro receive it's name? According to local legend the Guanabara Bay - near which the city is situated - was discovered in 1502 by Gaspar de Lemos, a Portuguese explorer who had given it the name of Rio, thinking it was a river. And since it was the month of January, the full name was Rio de Janeiro, the January River. Pure and simple. Maybe it's just a story, as several historians and researchers have since said that an experienced explorer could not have made such a mistake. Still the name stuck, and the story remains.
