"WACK! Art and the Feminist Revolution", which will be hosted by the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington DC, is the first major comprehensive show which explores the development, impact and ideals of feminism, between 1965 - 1980, by means of artworks made by female artists all around the world. At the same time, it is the largest and most impressive exhibition ever put together by the museum. |
Curators have selected nearly 300 works, signed by 118 artist, ranging from painting and sculpture to photography, film, performance art and multimedia, showcasing the evolution of feminism from it's beginnings to the 80's. The artists featured in the exhibition come from all over the world - USA, UK, Europea, Australia, India, Japan, China, proving that feminism has had a long lasting and powerful impact onto the world of arts. Rather than just presenting the creations, this show will try to re-interpret the whole of feminist art.
The story of feminist art begins in 1965, and the exhibition will be presenting the so-called proto-feminist creations of Louise Bourgeois, Yayoi Kusama, Yoko Ono, Yvonne Rainer, forerunner who greatly influenced and shaped Feminism. Other female artists present in the show Chantal Akerman, Eleanor Antin, Judith Baca, Judy Chicago, Ana Mendieta, Ulrike Ottinger, Howardena Pindell, Betye Saar, Miriam Schapiro, just to name a few. The 1980's will be featured by a small selection of works by Cindy Sherman or Lorrain O'Grady.
