Viscri, formerly Giscriu (in the saxon dialect Weiskirich, Veiskiri or Veeskiry), is a village located in Brasov county, Transilvania, Romania.
This village, solitary situated next to the big road wich links Brasov to Sighisoara, hosts one of the most spectacular fortified church. This church is part of the UNESO world heritage.
The Mihai Eminescu Trust, a foundation that is sponsored by Prince Charles, renovated this wonderful church and some houses from Viscri, restoring some of the brightness that the village had in the old times.
The isolation and the absence of ocupation, the only activity in Viscri being the agriculture, started in the early 90's the project named "Viscri natural wool socks".
The socks were crocheted from old wool sweaters by the women from the village. These socks were offered in the begining in exchange for food, sugar, oil, bread.
This project is also continued in these days and about 125 women make about 10.000 pairs of socks, gloves, hats, sweaters or slippers wich are sold all over the Romanian country and in Germany.
