Situated in the valley of the river Yantra, at a distance of 241 km from the capital Sofia and 107 km from the town of Ruse, Veliko Tarnovo is a town with very rich history. It was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire for 167 years, and has long traditions in the culture of Bulgaria.
The city is divided into an old and new parts. The most significant monument of culture in Veliko Tarnovo is the medieval fortress Tsarevets, situated on the homonymous peak, surrounded on three sides by the river Yantra.
Some of the most popular Bulgarian monasteries (76% of Bulgarians are Orthodox) - Patriarsheski, Preobrazhenski, Arbanashki, Plakovski, Kapinovski and Kilifarevski are situated in the vicinity of the town. The archaeological reservation Nikopolis Ad Istrum - a Roman and Early Byzantine town, founded by the emperor Trayan (98 - 117) in 106 AD is situated at a distance of 20 km from Veliko Tarnovo.
22 March is the official day of Veliko Tarnovo. On the special occasion guests and residents of Veliko Turnovo will be able to enjoy lights show as a grand final of the festive activities. The audio-visual performance “Sound and Light” speaks of the glorious and tragic history of Bulgaria via music, lights, lasers and church bells, which makes it a unique attraction for the country.
Walking is the best way to see Veliko Tarnovo. There are various historical museums, located in Old Town, and an art museum on an island in the river. Nearby Arbanassi on the hilltop 4 km away is also worth a visit, a taxi will cost about 3-4 Leva.
