Until September 2007 the State Russian Museum in St Petersburg is hosting one of the few exhibitions dedicated to a little known, yet major part - of Russian art history : litography. In Russia litography was one of the most popular forms of art, mainly due to the low costs of the reproductions. Over time litography gained it's own artistic language and means of expression, attracting many famous artists and producing some memorable art works.
The show is the first to retrace the history of Russian litography, from the first prints made in the 1810's to the block prints of the early 19th century. The curators have selected around 250 works, signed by more than 160 authors, including works of famous masters.
Among the schools and artists featured in the show are : the experiments made by Russian futurists in the 1910's ; the Experimental lithographic workshop in the 1930s Karl Beggrov, Stepan Galaktionov, Andrei Martynov, Ignaty Schedrovsky, Nadezhda Voitinskaya, Vladimir Konashevich, Georgy Vereisky, Boris Yermolayev, Anatoly Kaplan, Alexander Vedernikov, Vera Matyukh, Vadim Brodsky and Mikhail Karasik and others.
