Work by the four artists nominated for the £25,000 Turner Prize have been unveiled at London's Tate Britain.
The early favourite to win the prize is painter Gillian Carnegie, who creates unsettling versions of traditional styles like still life and landscapes.
Among her work is a series of nudes known as her "bum paintings".
The other nominees are Darren Almond, Jim Lambie and Simon Starling, who all produce installations.
The winner will be announced on 5 December.
Gillian Carnegie was born in 1971 and studied at Camberwell College of Art, going on to gain an MA in painting at the Royal College of Art.
Carnegie represents the first painter to be shortlisted in five years.
Gillian Carnegie works within the traditional genres of landscape, still life, nude and portraiture, using a variety of subjects.
Despite her classical training and methods, Carnegie is often exhibited alongside conceptual artists.
Last year's competition was won by Jeremy Deller for his video about US President George Bush's home town in Texas, and the Waco siege of 1993.
