This place became one of the most favorite tourist destinations in Lithuania. Since 2008 Trakai Island Castle gained an official status of a resort area. Like Venice or St. Petersburg, Trakai is a city on the water. The only difference is that it is not near the sea but surrounded by lakes.
Trakai Island Castle, constructed in 1410 just after the famous Battle of Grunenwald as a defense fortress, was turned into a residence of Grand Dukes of Lithuania Vytautas and Kestutis. Later on, it was used as a prison. At these times, however, it was almost completely neglected. The Trakai Island Castle is a museum today. Also plenty of concerts, events and festivals are held in this location.
In Lithuania, the castle is also considered to be one of the most beautiful historical monuments ever. The castle, an incredible architectural example of Gothic style, has a high and well-constructed strong wall all around it and also a forecastle which was built for the purpose of protection. Trakai was a medieval capital of Lithuania, and it still retains its historic charm.
Visitors to Trakai may enjoy one of the town's festivals, which include recognition of its history. The Trakai Castle Museum does require an entry fee, and English-language guided tours may be more costly than Lithuanian-language tours. For adults the ticket is about 15 Lt (4.5 Euro) and for pupils and students 7 Lt.
