The picture that is presented to the view when one arrives in New York is marvelous, when, after some days of voyaging, in the pearly radiance of a beautiful morning is revealed the magnificent spectacle of those immense cities [Brooklyn and Manhattan], of those rivers extending as far as the eye can reach, festooned with masts and flags; when one awakes, so to speak, in the midst of that interior sea covered with vessels... it is thrilling. It is, indeed, the New World, which appears in its majestic expanse, with the ardor of its glowing life.
Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi
The great statue was a gift of friendship from the people of France on October 28, 1886. It was designed by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi and the pedestal by Alexandre Gustave Eiffel. The Statue of Liberty is the symbol of freedom and democracy and was designed as a National Museum in 1924. It is located on the Liberty Island and to get there the visitors need to take a ferry. France provided arms, money and solders to the American people so they could won their freedom.
The statue represents the goddess of liberty holding a torch in her right hand and a tablet in her left. The tablet shows the date of the Declaration of Independence. One of the statue feets stands on chains and the seven spikes on its crown represent the seven continents. The high from the pedestal to the torch measures 93 m and the statue from the top of the base to the torch 46 m. The statue is built from copper plates, which are mounted on a steel skeleton. The green color is the result of the sea winds, rains and beating sun.
