The dream castles of the fairy tale king Ludwig II were built in the 19th century and it is situated in the beautiful Bavarian Alps, the picturesque rococo-style palace of Linderhof with its fantastic grotto, and the castle Herrenchiemsee, a grand replica of the Palace of Versailles, located on the island of Lake Chiemsee, Bavaria’s largest lake.
The most popular castle of all is the Neuschwanstein, which was built by the shy king, also named the fairy tale king Ludwig II . He wanted to withdraw from the public life, to have its own privacy. It was actually a Gateway Building.
King Ludwig’s private refuge became nowadays one of the most popular of all the palaces and castles in Europe. Every year the castle is visited by araund 1.3 million people and in the summer months over 6,000 visitors a day stream through rooms that were intended for a single inhabitant.
