The Cévennes represent more than a mountain chain. It is actually a range of mountains, a plethora of many sided open spaces and hills. In south – central France Cévennes is covering overing parts of the départements of Ardèche, Gard, Hérault and Lozère.
The summits are made up of a succession of slightly undulating plateaux, sometimes green like the Mont Aigoual or markedly flat and bare as on the Mont Lozere between Le Bleymard and Le Pont de Montvert. This entire area represents the center of the Cevennes National Park.
The symbol of the Cevennes region is the chestnut tree, which is also called the “bread tree”. The population of the high valleys in the Cevennes has dwindled more and more over the last century. Animal farming makes up the bulk of activity in the area, however the economy of the Cevennes relies heavily on tourism.
The Cevennes region is perfect for people who love the pure nature, Protestant temples, churches, old fortified villages with an extraordinary architecture
