Pyramide du Louvre is placed in the Cour Napoléon, the main courtyard of the Louvre Palace in the capital of France, Paris. It represents actually the main entrance to the Louvre Museum and since 1989, when it was completed, the pyramide became the symbol of the country and a landmark for the city.
The Louvre Pyramide consists of glass and metall and it is surrounded by three smaller pyramids. This piece of art was designed 1984 by I.M. Pei, who was also responsible for the design of the Miho Museum in Japan, the Place Ville-Marie in Montreal and the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. Francois Mitterrand was at that time the president of France.
The great pyramide was built, because the original main entrance of the museum, could no longer handle the enormous number of visitors. Although the construction triggered considerable controversy. Many people felt that the futuristic edifice looked quite out of place in front of the Louvre Museum, which has a classical architecture. The pyramide has also an underground lobby. During the time several other buildings took over this idea.
