The Royal Palace sits on top of Castle Hill overlooking the Danube on the Buda side of Budapest. It was the former Summer-Residence of Queen Elisabeth (Sissi) in Gödöllo, the second largest baroque chateau of the world and the largest monuments of Hungarian palace architecture.
Count Antal Grassalkovich I was the architect, the president of the Hungarian Chamber, and confidant of Empress Maria Theresa (1740–1780). The palace is sourrounded by a great park. During the time the building went through several enlargements. What we can see and visit today shape was established in the time of the third generation of the Grassalkovich family.
The palace became the symbol of independent Hungarian statehood and it was the summer residence of Queen Elisabeth. She loved spending the time in Budapest and she admired the warm character of the people.
Today the Royal Palace hosts the houses the Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest History Museum and the National Szechenyi Library. Visitors can admire the elegant elegant halls: the Ballroom, St. Sigismund Chapel, Palatinal Crypt, Great Ballroom, Main Staircase and the Habsburg Room
