The Roman baths are the symbols of Varna. These Roman baths are located in the largest Roman building from Bulgaria.
The exact location is in the south east part of Varna, at about 100 meters from the Black Sea and port.
The entire area occupies an area of 7000 meters an reaches at a height of 20 meters. These baths are the largest in the Balkans and among the top four largest baths built in the Roman Empire. The other ones are located in Rome in Italy, Turkey and Germany.
The only equivalent like this in the entire country of Bulgaria are the baths Augusta Traiana, located in Stara Zagora.
The Roman baths from Varna were made of stone and clay bricks. The walls from the interior are covered with marble. In the second century these baths were visited by many people and also there were some people which had the responsability of the entertainment. In the baths area were also included boutiques, commercial booths and games rooms. The archaeologists have determined that the baths were constructed in the year of 158. The oldest coin found in the sewage dates from around 275.
In the centuries after the fall of the Roman Empire the baths were refurbished and modified in several ways.
Annually, the baths from Varna are visited by over 20.000 tourists, most of them being foreigners. The baths requires conservation work. Without a work of conservation the specialists say that in 200 years the baths will disappear.
