The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco is one of the most beautiful and popular bridges in the whole world. It links the great metropola with Marin County and it has 1.7 mile. The bridge can be crossed by car, bicycles or on foot and it also has parking spaces and viewing areas.
It was bulit during more than four years at a cost of 35$ million and it was opened to vehicular trafic on May 28, 1937. the great event was announced by Franklin D. Roosevelt, the president of the United States of America.
Joseph Strauss was chief engineer in charge of overall design and construction of the project. He had little experience with cable-suspension designs and so the responsibility for much of the engineering and architecture fell on other experts.
The Brooklyn Bridge in New York, completed in 1883 and designed by John A. Roebling, was the first famous suspension bridge. It helped to define and add fame to New York City in much the same way that the Golden Gate Bridge has for San Francisco.
The last one become one of the most most internationally recognized symbols of San Francisco and it has been declared one of the modern Wonders of the World by the American Society of Civil Engineers.
