The name of the monument is The Cross of the Nation Heroes but in popular language is also called the Cross on Caraiman.The cross was built at the initiative of Queen Mary and King Ferdinand I of Romania, the main purpose being the one to be seen from a large distance.
The legends tell that the monument was built because Queen Mary had a dream about the Bucegi mountains that were covered with romanian blood in the First World War.The project was developed by the romanian architects Georges Cristinel and Constantin Procopiu.The visitors who will see this sublime piece of art from the majestic mountains of Caraiman will leave ipressed and certanly will come back another time. The Cross of the Nation Heroes is a monument built between 1926-1928, at 2291 meters altitude, on Mount Caraiman, to honor the memory of the heroes that were killed in the First World War, in battles against the German army for the recovery of Transylvania.
