The drawings and etchings of the Renaissance and Baroque are the stars of the latest exhibition opened at the Bakersfield Museum of Art in California, USA, until the 18th of November 2007. "Rebirth of the Classical Past" brings together works by major artists, such as Rembrandt, Durer, Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, Francesco Salviati, Pellegrino Tibaldi and others, for the first time selected for a single show, a major event for all art lovers. The drawings and etchings on paper featured in the show are representative for the styles and themes of the most important movements in European art for those times, such as Renaissance, Mannerism, Rococo, Baroque and others. Drawings are especially interesting, according to the organisers, for they offer a more truthful image of the artist's image and thoughts, often very different from the finished painting, as that might have been influenced by the patron. |
It is a double premiere for the Bakersfield Museum of Art : it is the first exhibition of this kind ever shown here and it is the first time that a Rembrandt composition arrives at the institution. The works selected for the show are on loan from various museums in the US, as well as from private collections. The main theme of the show is humanism and its depiction in art, and the varied works only prove that this was one of the most important subject since the Renaissance.
