During the Baroque era the woodcut techniques and creations achieved a new degree of popularity, and painters of great talent, today considered to be among the great masters of art, started working in this genre. Woodcuts were a difficult, yet very dramatic means of expression, providing the artist a chance of transposing emotion in a new medium. Due to the variations and easyness of printing, woodcuts were very successful.Yet, most of the painters prefered to work together with a master block cutter, who knew way better how to emphasize each and every line and colour. In the end the results of these collaborations were often masterpieces. The curators of the show have chosen 65 works, signed by some of the greatest artists, such as Titian, Albrecht Durer, Giuseppe Scolari, Peter Paul Rubens, Jan Lievens, Christoffel Jegher, Guido Reni, and others. |
