The early beginings of the History Museum in Aiud city, Alba county, are related to so-called Raritatvm Et Rervm Natvralivm Mvsevm, founded in 1796, next to academic Bethlen College, transferred to Aiud from Alba Iulia in 1622. At this date in the "Museum of rarity and natural things" or "The Home of Collections", beside of the samples from the natural sciences were also historical parts.
In year 1862 the professor Szathmary Karoly established the foundation of an antique collection of over 100 stone and bronze objects named "indigenous roman antiquities".
By the end of the nineteenth century the collection has been substantialy enriched thanks to Herepei Karol (1881-1896).
The Aiudean history museum was established as a independent cultural institution in 1950 and in the same year was moved in the Princely Palace, a component of the medieval architectural complex named the Citadel of Aiud.
The museum presents in the exhibition halls archeological remains that reveal the history of Aiud.
Many of the dacic materials discovered reached in other museums like Ardelean Museum from Cluj Napoca and National Museum of Budapest.
The temporary exhibition hall of the museum hosts diferent art exhibitions organized in collaboration with cultural institutions from Romania and other countries.
