The Whitney Museum of American Art in New York will host, starting on the 24th of May 2007, a fascinating exhibition, "Summer of Love - Art of the Psychedelic Era", depicting the radical and revolutionary changes in both art and populare culture that the hippy age brought upon the USA in the 1960s - 1970s. Those psychedelic times changed forever the way the young Americans (and then the world) imagined and created art, and the curators of the exhibition have tried to represent these visions and choices by means of several paintings, sculptures and photographs made by the artists of those years.
Among those featured in the exhibition are Isaac Abrams, Richard Avedon, Lynda Benglis, Richard Hamilton, Elliott Landy, Jimi Hendrix (with his only known watercolor), Robert Indiana, Yayoi Kusama, Richard Lindner, John McCracken. In order to create a more accurate image, several posters (many of exceptional historical and cultural value), album covers and magazines (mostly underground) have been selected. The exhibition will also include several film and multimedia installations, to retrace the atmosphere and charm of the popular clubs of the time.
"Summer of Love" has been premiered at the Tate Liverpool, later being also toured to Kunsthalle Schirn Frankfurt and Kunsthalle Wien.
