From the fifth century BC the Greek colonists settled the adjacent islands and the mainland and later the Romans came and in 303 AD, the emperor Diocletian build a huge palace in a place that in those times was called Salona.
Around this palace grew up a town, known today as Split. It developed mostly by the Middle Ages.
