Santorini has one of the most spectacular landscapes in the world. The villages are built on tall cliffs and they offer a breathtaking view over the submerged volcano. Santorini is, along with Mykonos and Crete, the most famous holiday destinations in Greece.
The name of the island was given by the Latin Empire in the thirteenth century. It refers to the old cathedral in Perissa, Saint Irene. Before than, the island was known as Kalliste, which means “the most beautiful”.
Santorini is located in the Aegean Sea. There are about 200 km between the island and the Greek mainland. Santorini is essentially what remains after an enormous volcanic explosion that destroyed the earliest settlements on a formerly single island. It is the most active volcanic centre in the South Aegean Volcanic Arc, though what remains today is chiefly a water-filled caldera.
The island is also known for its small wine industry, which is based on the grape variety. Visitors can also enjoy tasty tradistional food and an excellent wine. The viticultural pride of the island is the sweet and strong Vinsanto, a dessert wine made from the best sun-dried Assyrtiko, Athiri, and Aidani grapes.
