Biography
Early life
Salman was born in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, into a Indian muslim family with strong ties to the film industry. His father Salim Khan is a successful screenplay writer. One of Salim Khan's wives (he has two, the first being Salma Khan) is the famous dancer Helen. Salman's brothers Sohail Khan and Arbaaz Khan are also actors, if not as successful as Salman. Salman has two younger sisters (Alvira and Arpita), one married to actor Atul Agnihotri. He has dated stars Sangeeta Bijlani, Somy Ali, Aishwarya Rai and is currently dating model turned actress Katrina Kaif.
Controversy
Salman has been in the news for some controversial reasons:
On February 17, 2006, Salman was sentenced to one year in prison for hunting an endangered species, the Blackbuck deer. The sentence has been stayed by a higher court during appeal.
He was arrested for drunk driving and vehicular homicide. He lost control of his Toyota Landcruiser and ran over some people who had been sleeping on a Mumbai sidewalk. One was killed and three were injured.
The media had a field day with his romantic misadventures (a rocky romance with actress Aishwarya Rai, now ended).
He was accused of forcing his ex-girlfriend, Aishwarya Rai, to appear at several events sponsored by the Mumbai underworld, threatening her and boasting of his connections to organized crime. The "evidence" was a tape of a mobile phone call, later revealed to be a fake.
