The Seattle Museum of Art will host at the end of February 2008 the opening of a brand new show, "Roman Art from the Louvre", which presents to the best of Roman art from the Louvre collections, a first in Seattle. The selection made by the curators brings back to life almost 300 years of imperial Roman life, art, customs and history, in whole aorund 180 pieces, many never before having been exhibited outside of France. |
Visitors of this impressive show will have the chance of discovering how the Romans lived - from the member of the imperial court to the elite, thinkers and ordinary citizens, but also soldiers, slaves, foreigners, gladiators -, what art did they create and which were the themes and techniques mostly used. The exhibits range from paintings and mosaics to bronze statuettes, jewelry, glass, silver, sculptures, a wide range of artworks of all kinds, some of them still in exceptional shape. All these prove just how important art was in ancient Rome, as it was used for representing and praising leaders and deities, defining public and private spaces, as a tool of conquest and colonisation and last but not least for honouring and celebrating the dead.
