On the 24th of October 2007 the National Gallery in London will open a new exhibition, dedicated to the Renaissance art in Siena, the first chance for British art lovers to discover first hand the art, culture and political turmoil that marked the last century of existence of the Sienese Republic. Little known outside of Italy, the art produced in Siena in the 15 and 16 century is by all means remarkable.
The curators of the show have focused mainly on the works of two of the most important Sienese artists of that time, Francesco di Giorgio and Domenico Beccafumi, at the same time selecting some of the best creations of their fellow contemporary artists. As of now, around one hundred paintings, sculptures, drawings, manuscripts and other objects have been selected, and according to organisers even the specialists are in for a few surprises. |
Among the artists featured in the exhibition, besides di Giorgio and Beccafumi, Matteo di Giovanni, Francesco di Giorgio, Benvenuto di Giovanni, tignorelli, Pintoricchio, Beccafumi. Most of the works, on loan from prestigious museums and galleries all around the world, have been cleaned and restored for the show.
