Rachel Harrison (b. 1966) is at this time one of the most original, controversial and appreciated contemporary US artists, yet she manages to defy any category and art movement or theory, at the same time being surprinsingly fresh and impressive. Creating both sculptures and paintings, in a new manner, she creates and universe of colours, shapes and themes, that is both conflicting and peaceful.
"Voyage of the Beagle", the show hosted by the Kunstahalle Nurnberg in Germany is a comprehensive presentation of the works of Harrison, almost a retrospective due to it's size and diversity. Reuniting a series of photos documenting unusual sculptures of everyday life, the title of the show is also a pun at the famous publication of Charles Darwin, in which the scientist presented his experiences of the trip taken on the HMS Beagle |
In the creations of Rachel Harrison the references greatly range from Surrealism to Expressionism, in close combination with kitsch, popular culture, politics, consumer world, building in the end an image of the world that is fragmented and apparentely meaningless.
