After a trip of two miles by train, visitors continue their visit on foot for a distance of almost a kilometer in the most beautiful part of the cave, which includes Big Mountain (also known as the Calvary), Beautiful caves and Concert Hall. Here you will see stunning stalactites, stalagmites, calcite, and other incredible geological formations, as well as a wealth of wildlife. The cave itself is rather peaceful and completely dark, without natural light. Despite that around 100 animal species live in the cave!
The Concert Hall, famous for its unique acoustical values, can seat up to 10,000 people. Big Mountain (Calvary) is the highest point on the route through the cave - 40 meters taller front of the cave entrance. Mount was formed after the collapse of ceiling blocks detached from what was once a hall at the intersection of underground galleries. This ceiling has a thickness of 50 meters and is extremely solid. The Postojna Cave also known as the Beautiful caves is a real jewel of this underground world.
These galleries longer than 500 meters were discovered in 1891, but were not open to the tourists until 1926. They contain a series of beautiful rooms such as White Hall, Red Hall and The hall of tubes, decorated with stalagmites. The constant temperature the caves ranges from 8 to 10° C, therefore, appropriate clothing is advisable. The caves are located about 40 minutes out of Ljubljana, and are accessible by car. Parking is available for a daily fee. If you are without a car, there are shuttle, bus, and train services fom Ljubljana.
