The month of October is for the National Gallery of Ireland an occasion to present, for the first time, a fascinating retrospective of Polish art, from Symbolism to Modernism, from the 1880s to 1939, an impressive and comprehensive selection of works, most of them having rarely seen before in public. |
Although Polish art is largely unknown outside of Poland, the simple quality of the works is by all means astounding and is bound to cause some stir among art lovers. The works selected for this show - more than 70 - come from the National Museum in Warsaw, completed with loans from prestigious private collections and galleries.
The curators of the show chose to focus mainly of the Symbolist chapter of Polish history, at the end of the 19th century, continuing through modernism and abstractionism. Poland's often dramatic history also inspired and shaped some shocking and unusual imagery in the world of graphic arts, ranging from expresions of the ideal of indepenence to a much larger, borderless interpretation of art. |
