The Jewish Community Center in Manhattan, together with Contemporary Posters and The Polish Cultural Institute is presenting between November 16, 2006 - January 17, 2007 a fascinating and unique exhibition with the title POLISH JEWISH CULTURAL POSTERS, presenting several posters from the rich Contemporary Posters collection.
The history of the Jewish community in Poland is both tragic and beautiful, as it had a milenium before the WW2 and especially the Holocaust destroyed what was once an important part of Polish national identity. After recovering from the war, during the Communist regime, the Jewish community enjoyed a relative support from the government, which sponsored several cultural events organised by the community. More than that, several important artists were commisioned to create art posters, in order to publicize the events. Some of the posters presented in the exhibition are for Jewish movies, others for the operas and exhibitions which were presented at the E.R. Kaminski National Jewish Theater, with great success. |
These posters played a significant role in the life of the Jewish community, as these marked the golden age of the Polish School of Posters (1946-1989), being recognised by collectors and critics as some of the best examples of contemporary poster art, comparable to those of La Belle Epoque.
This event is only a part of a series organised by the The Jewish Community Center with the title "Visions of Jewish Life in Poland: Theater, Film and Posters".
