- Poienari fortress is located in Capatanenii Pamanteni from the Arefu village, Arges county, at an altitude of 850 meters.
The fortress is also known as "eagles nest of the old heroes" and some centuries ago was a part of a chain of fortifications that defended the north shores of the Romanian Country.
Poienari fortress is 27 kilometers away from Arges Court, on a small plateau on top of the Mountain Fortress where you can reach by climbing 1.480 concrete steps that pass through a dense beech forest.
The Arges Keys that made way through the high walls, mountainous, on a rocky spur can be seen the ruins of the fortress that people say was built by Vlad Tepes.
In fact he is the one who built the fortress known by the name Poenari, by the name of the old name of the village Poenari, being built probably in the 14th century as a place of refugy, by the legendary Negru Voda. To him are assigned the two marks near the top of the rock, leaved so like some giant shoes.
In the 13th century there was only one tower made by rough rock, but in the 14th century the fortification dressed all the peak with thick stone walls, lined with brick on the upper sides.
The construction could shelter only a garrison of about 30-40 soldiers, enough to disturb the enemy army movements. The fortress had a long shape, thick walls of about two meters and five defensive towers: four rounded and one prismatic.
A concrete staircase climbs from the foot of the mountain, to the fortress ruins from which height appears one of the most attractive landscapes. Also in the mist of these lands you can see Fagaras lands and Papusii (Doll) Peaks.
