Pisa is located in the north of Pisa province, on the border with the province of Livorno. The origins of Pisa are uncertain. In some documents we can read about Ligurian or Greek origin, whereas it is certain that it was an Etruscan settlement and later a Roman colony.
The Medieval Era coincided with the height of its economic, political and artistic growth. Pisa was from the beginning an important naval base in the Roman era. Through the years, the town intensified its Mediterranean trade.
The city walls, whose construction began around 1154-1155, were completed in the middle of the 14th century and today represent an important part of the architectural heritage. In the center of the city there are many religious and civic buildings, but also beautiful squares.
The central attractions in Pisa is the The Leaning Tower which is, among the other monuments, in Piazza dei Miracoli. The construction of this imposing mass was started in the year 1174 by Bonanno Pisano. When the tower had reached its third storey the works ceased because it had started sinking into the ground. The tower remained thus for 90 years until it was finished by Giovani di Simone and by Timmano Simone. In the inner side of the walls there are 294 steps in form of a spiral.
Even today the great monument is sinking very slowly about 1mm every year and nobody can know exactly if it will continue in the future.
