One of the lesser-known works by Pablo Picasso, the painting "Sylvette", was recently sold at an Australian art auction for the impressive amount of 6.9 Australian dollars. That is 6.5 million US dollars, quite a healthy sum, which was paid at the auction organised by the Deutscher-Menzies House. It is the biggest price ever paid for an art work in Australia, and is bound to remain that way for quite some time.
The composition is the abstract portrait of Sylvette David, one of the artist's muses and models - one of the many - and so far was considered a not so important work by Picasso. The previous record for Australia was set last year, when a painting by Brett Whiteley, a local painter, was bought for 3.48 million dollars. |
