The organisers of the famous World Press Photo Contest have started their invitation round for the 2007 edition, inviting press photographers and photojournalists throughout the world to submit their works. Only the photos taken in 2006 and intended for publication will be accepted, and the final deadline for registering is 11 January 2007.
All the informations regarding the contest are being posted online at worldpressphoto.nl/contest, in several languages. Between 27 January - 8 February 2007 a jury composed of 13 international experts in the field of press photo will analize all works that have been registered al the World Press Photo office in Amsterdam. The jury is going to be chaired by Michele McNally (US) who is an assistant managing editor for The New York Times.
The competitors have several categories, for which they can send single photos or stories/portofolios : Spot News, General News, People in the News, Sports Action, Sports Features, Contemporary Issues, Daily Life, Arts and Entertainment, Portraits and Nature.
The jury will anounce the winners on February 9th 2007 during a press conference in Amsterdam and also online, on the World Press Photo site.
The winning photos will then be presented in a travelling exhibition, in 90 cities from 55 countries, starting in April in Amsterdam.
World Press Photo in the most important annual contest of press photography in the world. At the previous edition, in 2006, 4.448 photographers from 122 countries have entered the competition, sending over 83.000 photos. Two years before, in 2005, the World Press Photo Foundation celebrated 50 years since the first edition of the contest, which took place in 1955 in Amsterdam. The 2007 edition in the 50th in the history of the foundation, for in 1959, 1961 and 1970 the contest didn't take place.
