Orvieto is a small city and one of the principal sights of the Italian region Umbria. It is situated on high tufa clips and it has a marvelous sight. Every street in Orvieto shows traces of every phase of history for the past three thousand years, culminating in its magnificent cathedral. The tufa butte on which Orvieto is located is itself riddled wells dating from Etruscan times to only a couple of hundred years ago. The most spectacular of these subterranean burrowings is the Pozzo di San Patrizio. It represents a deep well with a double spiral stair leading to a water source. The well is 62 m deep and it dates from 1537.
Orvieto is near the rovers Paglia and Chiana. various Etruscan elements are still extant, providing clues about the structure of the ancient city, Velzna. In the countryside around Orvieto there are many Etruscan tombs.
The city which rises on a plateau of volcanic tuff, sourrounded by a stupendous landscape of fields and vineyards is an excelent turistic destination. It has a charmic medieval character and it is famous because it’s “duomo”, it’s wine and it’s ceramics.
Orvieto is also famous because it’s Duomo, which has the most liveliest façade (1330) from Italy. The architect was Lorenzo Maitani.
