Baroque Palace, a former government building, constructed in 1754, called County House, has two floors and an attic. Two beautifull entrance in Viennese Baroque style impress. After restoration, here was the art department of the Banat Museum. Long time, between 1779-1848, as the County House, the palace served as residence of committee of Banat territories.
Between 1849 and 1860, in this buiding was the government headquarters of Serbian Vojvodina, being also the seat of government of Banat, and from 1861 County House again.
1767 is the year when the Emperor Josif II halted in Timisoara and on May 7 and 8, 1872 the building hosted the Emperor Franz Josef I, for that in 1923 King Ferdinand I and Queen Maria lived here three days, during the visit to Timisoara.
Mary Statue
On three sides of the base of the statue, carved in stone, is represented a scene of John Nepomuk Saint’s life. Queen of Bohemia hide a secret from her husband, King Wenceslav. For this reason, the king, very angry, asked to Nepomuk Saint, the queen’s confessor, to disclose the confessional secret.
Confronted by categorical refusals of the cleric, the king ordered that the cleric to be thrown into the Viltava river. The central figure of the monument is the Saint Nepomuk, above who dominates Mother of God, taking in hand flowers of lily, the symbol of purity.
The monument is made in in 1756 by the Viennese sculptors F. Blim and E. Wasserburger and there is in front of Old City Hall.
On April 3, 1724, in Timisoara, was founded the brotherhood dedicated to St. Mary and to Nepomuk Saint. The main purpose is to protect the good name of the neighbor, to preseve the social morality, to practice Christian charity towards the poor people, invalids, prisoners and other cruelty of fate.
