This Saturday, May 18th 2008, the gates of 12 major Bucharest museums will open wide for the public, for a series of cultural events in celebration of the International Museum Day, now at it's fourth edition in Romania. The "Night of the Museums", as the event is called, offers visitors the chance of discovering special and permanent exhibition from the 12 museums, to attend theatre and musical performances, dance shows, fairs and the likes. But the main events will take place at night, when the museums will stay opened from dusk to dawn, awaiting their guests. More than that, a special bus will be available for all, passing from one museum to another, besides regular fares.
The museums featured in this splendid cultural event are all from Bucharest : the Museum of Bucharest, the Museum of Art Collections, the National Military Museum "King Ferdinand I", Cotroceni, Museum, National Art Museum of Romania, the National Contemporary Art Museum, Geology Museum, George Enescu National Museum, the Grigore Antipa Natural History Museum, the History Museum of Romania, the Village Museum Dimitrie Gusti and last, but not least the Romanian Peasant's Museum. All of these institutions have prepared special programs and shows for this occasion.
You could start on Sunday by visiting the Village Museum, then move on to the Antipa Museum, where an exhibition of photography and albums, made by National Geographic Channel, is expecting visitors. Further on, for those who love music, the George Enescu Museum is offering several concerts and some documentaries about the famous musician. At the Cotroceni Museum there will be an unique exhibition of old costumes and clothes, while the Bucharest Museum still has the Gheorghe Tattarescu show, one of the largest and most important retrospectives dedicated to the artist. The History Museum will allow access, free of charge, to it's exhibitions dedicated to the cities of Romania at the end of the 19th century - the beginning of the 20th.
These are just a handfull of the options for the spending the Night of the Museum, an initiative that has gained more and more popularity over the last few years, and "threatens" to become one of the landmarks in Romanian cultural life. If you are in Bucharest at that time, you must not miss this, for it will be something to remember.
