The Bunkamura Museum of Art in Tokyo will open on the 7th of April a powerful and interesting exhibition dedicated to the works and talent of Amedeo Modigliani, one of the most original and representative artists of Paris, with a special accent on the painter's relationship with Jeanne Hebuterne, his lover and muse.
Modigliani met Jeanne when he was 32 years old, and the two started living together after a short while, despite their age difference (Jeanne was only 18). Modigliani was fascinated and inspired by the talent of the younger art student, who posed for him several times, but their story only lasted for three years, as the painter's health rapidly declined. Amedeo died at the age of 35, and two days after his death Jeanne commited suicide, throwing herself out of the window in her family's apartment, despite being pregnant with the second child of the couple.
This tragic ending of one of the most interesting love stories in art history left behind a rich collection of art and documents, kept with care by Hebuterne's family, away from public eyes. Only in the last years this vast collection of oils, watercolours, drawings (made by Amedeo and Jeanne) as well as the collection of photographs, letters and various documents has been exhibited in several museums and galeries around the world. So the Bunkamura Museum of Art in Tokyo has the chance of presenting this real treasure to the Japanese public, in order for them to discover a love tragedy of the past by means of art and writing.
