The importance for the Muslims of Mecca is inestimable. Here is the most sacred place in Islam for them: Ka'ba. It represents a mosque, which was built around a black stone by Abraham (according to their tradition). The Prophet Muhammad named Mecca as the Holy City of Islam, where all Muslims should go and pray. It is believed that the Ka’ba is the first place created on earth and the only one enveloped directly by heavenly blessing.
Mecca is located in the western Saudi Arabia and it lies in the sandy valley of Abraham, but also 277 m above the sea level. Every year millions of Muslims from around the world join in a pilgrimage to the holy city. All Muslims, wherever they are in the world, pray five times a day in the direction of Ka’ba. They gather during the Muslim month of Dhu’l – Hijja. For they who aren’t Muslims it is strictly prohibited to enter in Mecca and Medina. Great blocks are stationed along all the roads leading to the city.
Ka’aba is also called the “House of God” and it I covered in a gold-embroided black material. Pilgrims circle the Ka’ba seven times and they may touch or kiss the Black Stone.
