The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art has proven over the years to be a special place for art lovers, putting together inteligent and interesting exhibitions, ranging from presentations of major European art to the best of American or Asian art. One of the latest ongoing exhibitions is one of the most important shows in the museum's history, as it brings together the best of Fauvism, Cubism, Pop Art and Minimalism, based on the institutions rich collections.
For "Matisse and Beyond" the curators have selected an impressive number of paintings, sculptures and works on paper, signed by many of the greatest artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, ranging from Vija Celmins, Marcel Duchamp, Dan Flavin, Philip Guston, Ann Hamilton, Eva Hesse, Frida Kahlo, to Rene Magritte, Georgia O'Keeffe, Jackson Pollock, Robert Rauschenberg, Diego Rivera, Kiki Smith, Andy Warhol. Most of the works on display are rather popular, but have seldom been presented in exhibitions, and never together. A great idea, for that way the visitor has the chance of examining a comprehensive history of the art in the last two centuries, of seeing first hand some famous works, understanding the characteristics, ideals, techniques, themes and methods of each artistic movement.
