Well known for his socially engaged practice, as well as his crucial role in initiating in 1997 the first large contemporary arts event in Romania - the Periferic Biennial in Iasi - and establishing the Vector Foundation in the same city, Romanian artist Matei Bejenaru has been invited to take part in the 2012 DownStreet Art festival in North Addams, MA with an exhibition curated by Izabel Galliera, and supported by RCINY. While in residence in North Adams, the Romanian artist will develop a site-inspired project exploring the idea of a "Cultural House" as a nomadic structure, and based on a relationally fluid approach to community that aims to involve the participation and collaboration of various individuals and groups from North Adams. Matei Bejenaru's mixed media installations, documentary photographs, video and public performances examine the multi-layered impact of globalization on local communities.
