Maramures, county in the Transilvania region of Romania, in traditional culture terms comprises four distinct zones: Chioaru Country, Lapus Country, Maramures Country and Codru Country. At these four areas we can add the Metropolitan Zone Baia Mare.
Maramures is an administrative unit formed after the Great Union, in 1918, when the South part of Maramures entered into the composition of Romania, in the interwar period.
The county included at that time only the North-East part of today's Maramures, over the Gutai Mountains, and the residence was the city of Sighet.
In 1930 the county had a population of 161,575 inhabitants.
After the World War Two, the administrative limits of the county were modified resulting the current county Maramures.
Over the centuries that have passed only a few habbits changed . The families are in the same villages where their ancestors lived, the traditions are transmitted from generation to generation, the clothing is still handmade and the villagers worn it with pride.
