LUCIAN PINTILIE: The Complete Retrospective continues U.S. tour at Facets Cinematheque
“What is the survival strategy of a community in a state of perpetual catastrophe? And when does making fun—the assumed irresponsibility, the dark humor that we, Romanians, are so proud of—stop being an impenetrable shield? This is the number one matter in all my movies.” RCINY is proud to co-present with the Facets Cinémathèque the first Chicago complete retrospective on the cinema of Lucian Pintilie, following its successful U.S. Premiere presentation at MoMA in early March. One of Europe's finest filmmakers, Lucian Pintilie's work has explored questions of tyranny and remorse – often relating directly or allegorically to the history of his own country. With his work in both theatre and film banned by the communist regime, he fled Romania in the '70s, and returned to his home country after 1989, making extraordinary films about life and its absurdities. He has been both a prolific auteur and a supporter of a new generation of filmmakers. This complete retrospective of 11 films will be presented in Chicago at the Facets Cinémathèque from May 4-13. The opening night film, Pintilie's masterpiece REENACTMENT (1969) will be introduced by Thomas Pavel, Distinguished Professor at the University of Chicago. Presented in collaboration with the Romanian National Film Center in Bucharest, and with the support of Transilvania International Film Festival and Mihai Chirilov.
