Frederik IX, born on the 11th of Mars 1899 at Sorgenfri castle, the price goes to Naval School and succeeds in obtaining the command of a Danish fleet. Besides his passion for the sea, Frederik is also fond of music: he runs the Royal House’s Orchestra and The Symphonic orchestra of the Danish Radio.
He climbs the throne age 48 and proves a sensitive and modest king. On the 24th of May 1935 he marries Ingrid of Sweden with whom he has three daughters: Margrethe, Benedicte and Anne Marie - Frederick’s the single heirs, born before his succession to the throne.
By that moment the Danish crown was passed on to the male descendents of King Christian X. The birth of the three daughters of the royal family thus raises a problem regarding the succession to the throne. Therefore in 1953 the Constitution is modified, the unicameral regime is instituted as well as the law regarding the succession to the throne, to which now women have access.
Frederik and Ingrid led a simple life, became a real model of conjugal happiness and contributed to the modernization of the Danish monarchy’s image. In 1972 the king dies at Copenhagen Hospital due to pneumonia. His elder daughter, Margrethe follows him to the throne - thus becoming, after coronation, Margrethe II. She was born on the 16th of April 1940, only one week after the German invasion in Denmark. After five years she goes to school in a special classroom brought to the palace.
When she turns eighteen she becomes the regent of the kingdom and begins preparing for her future “job” as a queen, studying law school and philosophy at The University of Copenhagen. Then she studies constitutional law, politic science, economy and foreign languages at prestigious universities around the world.
During the spring of 1965 the princess takes part to an official dinner organized at London where she meets her future husband, Henri Laborde de Monpezat - a French diplomat with low noble degree, no fortune and moreover catholic. They get married on the 10th of June 1967 and have a successful, happy marriage. Though not exactly loved by the Danish at the beginning, being ridiculed and commented upon because of his arrogant attitude, his inclination towards luxury and his excessive elegance, the consort prince succeeds in gaining the hearts of the population when accepting the second position in the state.
Frederik and Joachim are the two sons of the royal couple. Born only one year apart they are both educated at the same time in order to become heir princes. On the 23rd of August 1988 the two brothers miraculously survive a car accident.
Frederik begins his education at a primary school in Copenhagen, between 1992 and 1993 goes to Harvard University and then returns to Aarhus in order to finish his studies. He takes his PhD degree in political sciences, becoming the first Danish royal prince with a degree (the queen, though having gone to university, did not graduate).
In 1995 he is admitted to the group of combatant swimmers (the toughest military formation of The Danish Army), along with three other candidates out of 300 participants. Two years later he is promoted captain in reserve of the land army and boat lieutenant in reserve.
He was prim secretary at the royal embassy in Denmark for two years, after which, bored of the sedentary life, he adventured in an expedition to cross Greenland – Sirius.
Inheriting the nonconformist and independent character of his father rather than the diplomatic character of the queen, Frederik was the subject for the first pages of tabloids for a long time, especially due to his love affair with rock singer Maria Montell.
On the 14th of May 2004 he marries Mary Elizabeth Donaldson, born in Hobart, Tasmania, in 1972. They have a son, Prince Christian (born in 2005) and a daughter (born in 2007).
