The largest and richest retrospective of J.M.W. Turner's works ever assembled in the US will be hosted by the National Gallery of Art in Washington, starting on the 1st o October 2007. The curators have already selected 70 oil paintings and around 70 works on paper made by one of the best landscape painters in the history of art, treying to present the vastness of subjects that interested Turner. The works chosen range from seascapes (a theme that gave some of the best of Turner's paintings), historical events, mythological scenes and modern life events to classical landscapes and even imaginary worlds.
The art of Turner played a key role in defining Romanticism and the way he played with light and atmosphere inspired countless younger artists and made the painter one of the most popular artists of the 19th century. Furthermore, Turner's profoundly personal style, marked by innovation and inteligent use of colors and effects would later influence Impressionism and even modern art.
