To celebrate the 60th anniversary of Indian Independence, the British Museum in London is presenting one of the best exhibitions of Indian art ever held in Europe, an impressive panorama of this exotic and faraway country's painting traditions, over the centuries. Curators have chosen an impressive number of works, ranging from the paintings made for courts, intimate and poetic, to the rich, vivid and powerfull imagery of the folk art. Some of the best works on display are the paintings depicting Hindu gods and goddesses, produced in the 1820's in South India, a Barahmasa series and several Paithan compositions.
With the title " Faith, Narrative and Desire", the exhibition tries to present the essential themes, subjects and questions that have tormented Indian artists throughout history.
