Hosted by the Patriarch's Palace, it is one the best exhibition ever presented at the Kremlin, dedicated to the Russian school of icon painting in the 17th century, a major part of the genre's history. For this amazing show the curators have selected an impressive collection of icons and items, from the Kremlin Museums collections, many of these being only recently restored, with great care.
The story of this chapter in the history of Russian icons begins in 1613, when a young Michael Fyodorovich Romanov became the new Tsar. From his early days as the supreme ruler of Russia the Tsar began an ambitious project, the reconstruction of the Moscow Kremlin, with it's beautiful and impressive buildings. For this, some of the best icon painters in Russia, many of them considered to be inspired by God himself, executed icons, paintings, while others produced a great number of flags, miniatures, manuscripts.
The rich collection of icons hosted at the Kremlin has slowly been put together over several centuries, and visitors of the show have the chance of seeing icons from various Russian churches, made by the renowned icon painters of the Michael Fyodorovich Romanov's workshop, such as Istoma Savin and his sons, Nikita Davidov, Marc Matveev and others. |
