The island has the UNESCO World Heritage designation for its cultural wealth, including the outstanding Phoenician site at Sa Caleta, the necropolis at Puig des Molins, and the historic old town of Eivissa, Dalt Vila. Ibiza is also known as the 'white island' due to the predominance of its white houses. When it comes to scenery, Ibiza has it all; amazing beaches, heavy woods and rocky cliffs.
The relatively small island and its cities have become world-famous for their associations with tourism, nightlife, and the electronic music the island has originated. Ibiza is a cosmopolitan island and its atmosphere, the climate, the entertainment on offer and its attractive natural envirnonment attract a high number of tourists all year round. You can choose between tiny coves, broad beaches of fine sand, or areas of dunes.
The northern part of the island, known as Els Amunts, is made up of fertile land, small forests and almond and olive groves. The coast is spectacular with pretty coves and dramatic cliffs. The excellent sandy beaches are well equipped for tourists. The main toursitic beaches are Portinatx, Port de Sant Miquel and Sant Vicenç. Ibiza is, however, much more than sun and sand.
Apart from its atmosphere and nightlife the city has a number of interesting historical monuments: Dalt Vila, Portal de Ses Taules, Almudaina Castle, The Virgen de las Nieves Cathedral, Puig de Molins Monographic Museum, The Puig de Molins Necropolis, The Archeological Museum, The Townhall, The Episcopal Palace, Santo Domingo Church (16th century, baroque style) and The Contemporary Art Museum.
Dalt Vila - the higher part of the city - this is the old part which is walled and is where you can find remains of Ibiza's past. The wall was built by Felipe II in the 16th century to protect the island from pirates and the Otomans. In 1999 UNESCO declared it a world heritage site.
