Huniad Castle was built by King Carol Robert of Anjou, after his visit in Timisoara, in 1307. The King has decided to set up the residence here. Probably, the building was built by Italian builders, is finished in 1315 and in 1316 King was already established in the new castle, where he lived almost eight years. The last document signed by him in Timisoara dated June 15, 1323.
In the north there is a fortress with rectangular shape too, around it later developed the medieval town. In 1849 the building was destroyed in ground up and had to be completely rebuilt, the current form dating from 1856.
It has a tower in Romanesque style and the facade of burned brick. Today is Banat Museum and can see two street lamps with inscriptions in several languages that Timisoara was the first town in Europe, which in 1884 introduced electric public lighting.
Dicasterial Palace
This building represents one of contributions of eclectic architecture in Timisoara. It was built between 1855-1860 to serve as administrative building. The Palace is imposing and sobriety by volume and auster facades made in a manner inspired by the early Italian Renaissance style. Huge size for that time, Dicasterial Palace was built around three interior courtyards with six gates, has four floors except the basement space, 273 rooms for offices.
It is said that this building has many windows as many days a year has.
The Name Dicasterial comes from the Greek dikasterion that called court to swear in antiquity, thr monument hosting juridical institutions also today.
