Hina Matsuri is still one of the most important and popular annual holidays in Japan, since the Edo period (1615 - 1867). Also known as Girls' Day or Festival of the Dolls, it announced not only spring, but also the coming of age for young girls. In order to mark this moment every house had the so-called hina dolls, presented in beautiful and elegant displays. At the start of the Edo period this dolls were presented in simple, even rustic display, and the most popular models were the ones representing the Imperial couple. Later this dolls became more elaborate and elegant, as did the displays, many of those being castle inspired sets, with several dolls - nobles, warriors, women - and miniature furniture.
The exhibition will open on the 17th of February 2007 and is expecting it's visitors until the 8th of April 2007, to rediscover an ancient art, today - sadly - almost forgotten by many.
